Awards can be powerful motivators, but nonstop recognition does not inspire children to succeed. Instead, it can cause them to underachieve.
I’m starting to feel that the tide is shifting on this in the right direction. I am hearing more and more parents express frustration with the “participation trophy” parenting of the past generation. Perhaps it is because we are now dealing with the results of it in the workplace as we manage the children who were raised to believe that they should be praised for just showing up.
